Nature-Based Lessons Using Technology - Rincon Middle School San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative This
film showcases seventh-graders at Rincon Middle School in Escondido
exploring the nature in their schoolyard, collecting insects and other
invertebrates, and learning how to observe and identify them.
Students are fascinated by the details of insects they just collected
in their own schoolyard as they view them through dissecting
microscopes. This film documents the ease of getting students outdoors,
the use of simple technology to take learning to a deeper level, and
the impact of hands-on personal experiences in the students’ own
schoolyards. The science teachers, principal, and nature
consultant offer their perspectives on using technology for
nature-based science lessons to increase student engagement and
learning. This project was funded by the USDA Forest Service and
sponsored by the San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative, a Program
of the San Diego Science Alliance.
